Coming to Madeira and not going for a walk alonggside a “levada” or on mountain trail, is missing one of the most exciting experiences that a hiker can have.

Yellow Bus Travel 360°

On Madeira Island there are tourist buses that allow you to enjoy excellent city sightseeing tours.

These double-decker buses give you the opportunity to enjoy the landscape with a 360 degree view.

The tours are between the cities of Funchal and Câmara de Lobos and are accompanied by an audio-guide in several languages, explaining the history of the places and monuments as you pass.

Guide Trails/walks

25 Founts (Rabaçal-25 Founts)

Distance: 4,6 Km (+ 4,6 Km return)

Degree of dificulty: Moderate

Both trails begin on the regional road (E.R. 110) and go down to the Rabaçal government house. The trails diverge along two parallel 'levadas' located on different levels.

Risco trail (Rabaçal-Risco)

Distance: 1.5 Km (+1.5Km return)Degree of dificulty: Easy

Caldeirão Verde trail (Queimadas-Caldeirão Verde-Caldeirão do inferno)

Distance: 8,7 Km (+ 8,7 Km return)Degree of dificulty: Moderate

Beginning in the Queimadas Forestry Park, this walk is 'out-and-back', and crosses some spectacularly steep slopes, but is one of the finest ways of penetrating the deep valley of the São Jorge brook on foot; you'll need a torch on this walk, which passes through a tunnel.

Balcões trail (Ribeiro Frio-Blacões)

Distance: 1,5 Km (+ 1,5 Km return)Degree of dificulty: Easy

Starting at Ribeiro Frio, this short walk follows the levada of Serra do Faial, and gives access to the Balcões viewpoint with superb views over the valley of the Ribeira da Metade.

Monte Sledges (Monte-Funchal - 2km - 10 minutes)

In Madeira you will find a very special form of transport, the "Monte sledge" made of wicker and wood with two or three seats. It's an unmissable experience!

These sledges are powered by two strong men, or sledge drivers, who control this transportation by making use of their boots as brakes.

Cable Car

(Funchal-Monte - one way)

This trip offers magnificent panoramic views from Funchal to the surrounding mountains of Monte and take around 15 minutes.

Botanical Garden Cable Car

The Botanical Garden Cable Car connects the Botanical Garden Station, Quinta do Bom Sucesso, and the secondary station Babosas - Monte. The journey lasts about 9 minutes, catching a stunningly beautiful landscape, among hills, valleys, streams and the lush Laurissilva Forest.

Cabo Girão ViewPoint

The Cabo Girão viewpoint, situated on the highest promontory in Europe, at an elevation of 580 m, offers an astonishing view of the fajãs of Rancho and Cabo Girão - small areas of cultivated land at the foot of the cliff - as well as magnificent panoramic views over the ocean and the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos and Funchal.
